Well wasn't that quite the intro to a sevens season? There is a long standing joke that rugby players do not run on time, and organization is not our strong suit. Having said that I am fairly confident that we will not run into organization issues at future tournaments, and certainly not at our home matches (It is not a coincidence that I coach and Kelly handles a lot of the administration stuff).
Special shout out to Natalie & Brittany for being outstanding mercenaries for our team!! Brittany was very flexible when I asked her to play positions she had never played before. And major props for Natalie, being a middle school player, making very solid tackles and superior decision-making while playing in a high school tournament! Thank you so much ladies!!
What I think we did well
Fitness is not as bad as everyone thought!
Communication was good!
What we'll work on in practice
Flat line defense: They only had one practice with this and it's not an easy thing to remember in the moment.
More decisions other than going into a tackle: We spend a lot of time this Spring teaching the girls not to be afraid to go into a tackle, because when a player is afraid of the tackle, they throw the ball away. These girls are not afraid of the tackle anymore. Now we'll start to teach them other options they have to maintain possession and advance down the field.
Long Passes: Sevens is the same sized field as 15s, but with half the people, passes either have to make it, or the players have to adjust to make it.
With practice and education we will continue to get better and be an unstoppable force! All in all I am very proud of the girls and their performance this weekend. I am also especially proud of all the parents (Edurado & Toya esp) for not panicking when Mia got throw around like a rag-doll.
Scores are as follows according to the referees
Valkyries over West Carroll/Gettysburg- 20-15: Paige (2); Chase (2)
Valkyries over Delaware Diamonds - 30 - 0: Paige (3); Chase (1); Isobel (1); Brittany (1)
Valkyies v. Landshark Ladies: Coaches forfeit minutes into second half due to safety concerns. Score at that time. Landshark 5, Valkyries 0.
See you Tuesday!
Summer Sevens is a fun season in my opinion. When I was playing we used it as an excuse for team bonding. My life at that time consisted of going to work and hanging out with my teammates. We only practiced once a week, but it was rare that I didn't see at least one of my teammates on a daily basis. It also became a weekly tradition of everyone showing up at one teammates house, starting a bon-fire and grilling out every Sunday.
My plan this Summer is to treat every practice, like a practice and to treat every match like a practice. We will strive get better at what we already know and to try new things. No one should ever feel bad after a match or after a day of rugby, there is no need. Take the bad things that might happen and develop a plan to change it. We are not trying to go to states, we are just out there to stay in shape, learn more about rugby, get to know our teammates and to have fun!I
I'm excited for this season and I hope you are too!
